Lehua, the Big Island's Bear

Lehua, the Big Island Bear

Lehua is my second beaded teddy bear. She represents the Big Island of Hawaii.
There are lava beads on her paws, to represent the volcanoes of the Big Island (Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Kilauea).
Lots of miniature beaded Red Ohia Lehua blossoms (The Big Island's official flower), Ohelo leaves/berries and ferns, form her Haku Lei. She's ready to join her friend Lokelani, the Maui's Bear. :-)

Colors and flowers of Hawaii

Lehua & Lokelani

In addition to the yellow hibiscus, which is the State flower, each Hawaiian island has its own official color and flower.

Hawaii (The Big Island) ~ Red ~ Red Ohia Lehua
Oahu ~ Yellow ~ Yellow Ilima
Maui ~ Pink ~ Pink Lokelani
Kauai ~ Purple ~ Mokihana (A green berry)
Molokai ~ Green ~ White Kukui Blossom
Niihau ~ White ~ Pupu (Little white snail shells)
Lanai ~ Orange ~ Kauna'oa
Kahoolawe ~ Gray ~ Hinahina
Molokini ~ Medium Blue ~ Limu Kala...

Tiny Lehua Blossoms, Ohelo Berries & Leaves, Ferns

Today I was hoping to finish Lehua the teddy bear...
I thought all these leaves and blossoms would have been enough to finish its haku lei, but...

After attaching all those leaves and blossoms, I only reached about 2/3 of the needed lenght. Whaaa!

Working on Lehua's haku lei

I'm using size 15/0 Japanese seed beads for the miniature ferns and ohelo leaves, Czech true cut 15/0s for the miniature lehua blossoms.
These things a tiny!

Laurie, thank you so much for teaching me how to make the double St, Petersburg chain! :-) Without your help, I'd be still fighting with these tiny ferns! ;-)
